CELA - the center
The Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CELA) at the University of Kassel promotes teaching and research on Latin America from an interdisciplinary and cooperative perspective. The mission of CELA is to support the coordination of Latin American studies at the University of Kassel, strengthen collaboration with Latin American universities, and represent these efforts at regional, national, and international levels. A key component of CELA is its participation in the Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CALAS), an international research network funded by the BMBF, with locations in Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Cuba, where the University of Kassel plays a leading role in its management. In addition, CELA fosters academic exchange through workshops, research stays, and public lectures, positioning itself as a central point of contact for scholars and institutions interested in developing joint projects. Each year, CELA announces an international fellowship at the University of Kassel on current topics.
CALAS research network
The CALAS research network is structured as an international consortium with seven locations in Latin America and Germany, based on a continuous and robust scientific collaboration between universities in both regions. In Latin America, the consortium includes the University of Guadalajara (Mexico), the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Ecuador), the University of Costa Rica, the National University of San Martín (Argentina), and the University of Havana. In Germany, the consortium consists of Bielefeld University, the University of Kassel, and Leibniz University Hannover. CALAS promotes cooperation in interdisciplinary research, regularly announces research fellowships, and organizes various events, knowledge labs, and dialogue platforms in different formats.
The CELA at the University of Kassel, in collaboration with the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Stuides (HIAS) in Hamburg, annually offers an international research fellowship that brings CALAS’s international research to Germany and, specifically, to Kassel.
